BBEdit 8.6 Released

In January, right at the start of Macworld Expo, we shipped BBEdit 8.6, which further builds on the major overhaul achieved in BBEdit 8.5. BBEdit 8.6 is a free update for all registered BBEdit 8.5 customers.

BBEdit 8.5 included more than 160 new features and improvements, designed to streamline navigation and ease discovery of BBEdit's powerful feature set. These changes included significant revision to the text-editing window and Preferences, including new per-language option settings, and the replacement of the traditional Glossary feature with an intelligent Clippings system. Other notable changes include an enhanced Find Differences, FTP/SFTP, Disk Browser, and Text Factory. BBEdit 8.5 also introduced code folding, Auto-save and Check Spelling As You Type features, as well as Ruby, SQL and YAML language support.

BBEdit 8.6 brings significantly improved Java and TeX language support and support for "Markdown" structured text, as well as "Save as Styled HTML" and "Copy as Styled HTML" commands for creating Web pages that include code examples. BBEdit 8.6 can also read and write files in binary plist (property list) format.

Detailed information on the changes and improvements implemented in BBEdit 8.6 can be found at:

BBEdit 8.6 is a Universal application that requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and is available at a suggested retail price of US$125. Registered owners of BBEdit 8.0 thru 8.2.6 can upgrade for US$30; registered owners of BBEdit 7 and older can upgrade for US$40.

MacTech Special Offer

Our products are known for setting the standard in automation support. BBEdit, Mailsmith, Yojimbo, and TextWrangler are all extensively scriptable, and BBEdit was the first commercial product to offer a collection of Automator Actions. So, we thoroughly understand the value of AppleScript.

As such, when MacTech devotes an entire issue to the topic of AppleScript, it gets our attention. Also, they have a special offer, good through March 31.

Anyone who takes advantage of this offer will get a six month subscription (a $50 value) for just shipping and handling costs ($9.95). This offer starts with the Special issue covering how to move from VBA to AppleScript for Microsoft Office, which is 3x the size of a regular issue. You may have friends who are new to the platform, or you may want to try MacTech for the first time -- we thought you'd just like to know. For further details see:

Yojimbo 1.4 Ships

In January, we shipped Yojimbo 1.4, adding AppleScript support to our easy-to-use information organizer. Now you can incorporate Yojimbo's power in concert with other productivity tools in an automatic workflow.

"I find Yojimbo is a good way to keep my desktop organized, and that makes me be, and feel, more organized," explained Chris Nandor, senior developer for Slashdot. "And as of version 1.4, it's now scriptable, so I can write Perl and AppleScripts to create, find, and manage my data."

Yojimbo 1.4 is also a maintenance release that fixes reported issues and adds several significant refinements. Yojimbo 1.4 requires Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later. The latest update, Yojimbo 1.4.2, is available free of charge to all registered Yojimbo customers on our web site:

TextWrangler 2.2 ships

Also in January, we released TextWrangler 2.2, a significant upgrade to the award-winning text editor.

With more than a hundred new features and improvements, TextWrangler now draws from the major interface overhaul we made in BBEdit 8.5 and the language support improvements from BBEdit 8.6. These changes streamline navigation and ease discovery of TextWrangler's powerful feature set.

"TextWrangler gives the Mac community a strong, capable text editor," explained Rich Siegel, founder and CEO of Bare Bones Software, Inc. "As the little brother to BBEdit, this update brings to TextWrangler the well-conceived, attractively presented enhancements and features which help increase our customers' productivity. For TextWrangler 2.2, we've taken a huge leap forward in interface polish and usability, increasing the potential for the Mac community to be more productive than ever."

TextWrangler 2.2 provides significant revision to the text-editing window and Preferences, including new per-language option settings. Other momentous revisions include enhanced Find Differences, FTP/SFTP, and Disk Browser. BBEdit 8.5 also introduced Code Folding, Auto-save and Check Spelling As You Type features, as well as Ruby, SQL and YAML language support.

TextWrangler 2.2 adds significantly improved Java and TeX language support, and support for the "Markdown" structured text format. TextWrangler 2.2 can also read and write files in the binary plist (property list) format used by Mac OS X 10.4.
